History of Tampa Bay Downs - Opened in 1926  a Turf and Field Club was formed, and headed by Hal Thompson. The track reopens as Tampa Downs. Inadequate handles force the meeting to close after only six days and the U.S. Army builds barracks and turns the track into a jungle warfare training center in 1943.

Battled for the riding title down to the last week before Jesus Castanon edged away…Went on to Great Lakes Downs were he topped the rider standings for the third time in four years having also claimed the top spot at the Muskegon, MI. oval in 2001 and ’02… Notched milestone 3,000th win June 3, 2002 in the first race at Great Lakes Downs aboard Blossom Hill trained by Gerald Bennett…Houghton’s mounts have earned in excess of $25 million during his 13-year career… Ranked 16th nationally by wins in 2002 with 253 and $2,149,929 in earnings…Houghton was ranked third nationally in wins in 1999 behind Russell Baze and Edgar Prado.
